I am in the city of Dujiangyan, in Sichuan Province, China, attending and speaking at the 2013 International Forum on ICT in Education. One of the speakers is Mr Siekula Vannie, Director of IT in the Office of the Vice-President of Liberia.
I visited Liberia in May 2007 and spent a day at the Kakata Rural Teacher Training Insitute, one of three such colleges around the country that had been shut down through the 14 horrendous years of civil war in that country. The two men who had been Principal and Deputy Principal of KRTTI had returned to the college campus, set in a beautiful part of the country just a few kilometres from the capital Monrovia, with the intention of re-establishing the college. The students above were at that time attending the high school nearby.
I was very pleased to hear Mr Vannie mention that, earlier this year, 2013, KRTTI had its first graduation ceremony for newly trained teachers since the college re-opened, and that proud day was attended by President Sirleaf.
Very good news indeed.
