A chapter by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifecircles-inc.com\/Learningtheories\/humanist\/mezirow.html\">Jack Mezirov<\/a> entitled <em>An Overview on Transformative Learning<\/em> caught my interest. In this, he outlines the concept of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transformativelearning.org\/\">transformative learning<\/a> using the work of practitioners, writers and theorists as diverse as Paulo Freire, Thomas Kuhn, Roger Gould, Harvey Siegal, Jurgen Habermas, and others.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, I liked some words he took from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.egs.edu\/library\/juergen-habermas\/biography\/\">Habermas<\/a> in which the German philosopher set out what he considered to be the ideal conditions for human discourse. By doing so, he was attempting to define the &#8216;optimal conditions for adult learning and education&#8217;. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To freely and fully participate in discourse, learners must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have accurate and complete information<\/li>\n<li>be free from coercion, distorting self-deception or immobilizing anxiety<\/li>\n<li>be open to alternative points of view &#8211; empathetic, caring about how others think and feel, withholding judgement<\/li>\n<li>be able to understand, to weigh evidence and to assess arguments objectively<\/li>\n<li>be able to become aware of the context of ideas and critically reflect on assumptions, including their own<\/li>\n<li>have equal opportunity to participate in the various roles of discourse<\/li>\n<li>have a test of validity until new perspectives, evidence or arguments are encountered and validated through discourse as yielding a better judgement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, these could just as easily be applied to the ideal conditions for effective learning generally.<\/p>\n<p><!-- technorati tags start --><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:right;font-size:10px;\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/tag\/knud illeris\" rel=\"tag\">knud illeris<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/tag\/jack mezirow\" rel=\"tag\">jack mezirow<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/tag\/jurgen habermas\" rel=\"tag\">jurgen habermas<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/tag\/transformative learning\" rel=\"tag\">transformative learning<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- technorati tags end --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am reading an interesting book on my iPad&#8217;s Kindle App at the moment: Contemporary Theories of Learning: Learning Theorists&#8230;in their own words.
